Barber’s Truth: “The Only Wrong Client Is the One Who Doesn’t Show Up”

We sat down with Aya, a local Phoenix barber with over seven years of experience, to talk about clients, success, and the growing barbering culture across Arizona. Her story reflects what many small business owners in the Valley know too well — success isn’t about luck, it’s about skill, dedication, and passion for people.

“You can make money anywhere if you’re good at what you do — especially when you keep learning,” Aya says.

From Co-Working Chair to VIP Barbershop Owner

Aya began her journey like many young professionals — renting a chair by the day or week in a co-working salon, charging $10–15 per cut while practicing on friends.

When the shared space closed, she and her husband decided to open their own shop in Phoenix — VIP Barbershop, located right in the heart of the city.

“Starting in a new, high-end environment was important. When a client walks in for the first time, they don’t yet care which barber they see — they care about how they feel,” Aya explains.

Barbering Is About People — and Psychology

Today, Aya serves roughly 400 loyal clients — from professionals and students to blue-collar workers who just want to look sharp. She believes that being a barber isn’t only about cutting hair; it’s about connecting with people.

“Early on, I didn’t always understand what a client wanted,” she laughs. “Now, after years of work, I can usually tell what someone’s asking for even if they can’t explain it.”

Of course, things don’t always go perfectly. Aya recalls one incident where a client came late, said “the usual,” and she misunderstood his style. But instead of arguing, they worked it out — and he left a good tip.

“In this business, it doesn’t matter who’s right or wrong — if a client’s unhappy, it’s on you. So I avoid conflicts and focus on solutions,” she says.

Barbershops Aren’t Just for the Rich

Aya wants to break the stereotype that barbershops are only for people with money.

“Everyone wants to look good — that’s human nature. Even working-class clients who used to go to basic salons come here now. A clean haircut isn’t luxury; it’s self-care,” she says.

In Phoenix, a professional men’s haircut typically costs $35–40, which most people can afford once a month.

According to recent small-business data, the barbering industry in Arizona has grown by nearly 20% over the past five years, with hundreds of independent shops opening across the Valley. Many of them are locally owned, like Aya’s.

No Limits to Growth

Phoenix has no shortage of barbershops, but Aya believes competition is still healthy — and there’s plenty of room for innovation.

“Some barbers stop learning once they have regular clients. But that’s when burnout starts. I always try new things — scalp massages, facial masks, grooming treatments. If you introduce it right, clients will love it,” she says.

Aya dreams of building a small chain of barbershops with her husband — modern spaces that combine service, community, and education for up-and-coming barbers.

“Barbering is more than cutting hair. It’s about connection, confidence, and constant growth,” she smiles.
